FAQ about birth stories

Birth stories are everywhere. Birth happens on toilets, at homes, in the car, but we need to remember them! Hire a birth photographer to not lose those memories!

Documenting birth stories is my passion. Here are some frequently asked questions to give you an idea of what I do.

What is birth photography?

Birth photography is documenting one of the most important events in your life, while allowing the partner and support team to be fully devoted to the laboring mother. My approach to birth photography is very tasteful, unobtrusive and photojournalistic. Your photographs will be captured in a documentary or candid style. I hold it as an honor and privilege of being invited into the sacred space where heaven meets earth.  While you work hard to bring new life to the world, I will capture the small moments: the pain, the discomfort, the embrace of a loved one, the gentle touch of the nurse, the rush, the joy, the quiet wonder as you cradle new life, as well as the big ones. The images will be truthful, artistic, emotional, storytelling images.  The photographs can be as graphic as you wish. Crowning photographs are only captured upon request of the client.

What is a birth story session and what does it cover?

I will be on call 24/7 at 38 weeks gestation. I will provide  constant coverage, photographing everything you want and feel comfortable with when you go into active labor (at about 6 cm dilation). I will stay 1-2 hours after birth to capture cutting the umbilical cord, the newborn exam, skin-to-skin cuddles and anything else important in that time frame.

What types of births do you attend?

I attend all types: home births, birthing center births and hospital births, including c-sections at area hospitals in the Utah and Salt Lake Counties.

Do you talk much?

After having 3 different birth experiences myself (2 induced with epidurals and 1 unmedicated), I have a personal understanding of what you’re going through during labor and delivery. However, I will follow your lead during labor and delivery. As my default approach, I try to stay out of the way as much as possible and become more of a “fly on the wall.” If you’d like to talk or I can offer a little extra support, I’d love to!

Why should I hire a birth photographer?

A child’s birth is one of the most life-altering moments you and your family will experience. When you got married, maybe one of the most important parts of your preparation was finding the right photographer. The birth of your children should be no different. It’s such a magical and emotional experience, and I am very passionate about capturing it for you to relive the joy over and over again. Those moments are worth capturing, and you will cherish them forever.

Why is birth photography so expensive?

In calculating the investment of this momentous occasion, I take into account many things: the actual time spent covering the birth, the time spent selecting the very best images and then editing them, and finally the time spent uploading the images for you to download. There are other costs involved in maintaining a business of this sort: the equipment (camera, flash, memory cards, etc) that is necessary to shoot in all different lighting levels, the editing software, this website, specialized training and workshops to become a better birth photographer. I am committed to become the best I can be in what I do. I am committed during the on call time, ready to leave at a moment’s notice that baby is finally on his or her way.
